Our Story

Waipi’o Cookhouse

It started in 2010 with the purchase of the vacant undeveloped 17 acres of Agriculture land in Kukuihaele Hawaii on the North Coast of the Big Island. Work began on Kanahonua  Farms in January of 2011 with the planting of citrus fruit orchards, banana patches, papaya trees, lilikoi and many other tropical fruits.

In 2012, we wanted to open a smoothie stand on our farm but while talking with Hawaii State Planning & Zoning, we were made aware of a new law (HRS 205.5) that promoted Hawaii Agriculture sustainability. It allowed farmers to sell to the public everything grown in the state  - not just limited to just what they grew by the way of a fruit stand, vegetable stand or a restaurant.

Waipi’o Cookhouse was born!  With no experience in the restaurant business (except washing dishes and eating), I needed help with the floor plan, layout and equipment. Paul Gamache was a major help with this as well as introducing us to Sandy Barr-Rivera.  Sandy has a background in resort cooking, working as a chef at gourmet restaurants as well as teaching at the Culinary School in Hilo, Hawaii. Since we had little knowledge about food costs, recipes for the menu we had in mind as well as the pricing of our menu, Sandy was our guiding light and he got us started off on the right foot.

We decided to create a farm to table establishment theme for the restaurant. We use only fresh ingredients in all dishes and no processed foods or ingredients are used in any of our dishes. We grow our own beef, lamb and pigs on our farm and grow all of our fruit for our fresh smoothies & even all the herbs used in the Cookhouse!  All the vegetables we cannot grow,  we source from local farmers.

We cook BBQ pork ribs, beef brisket, & our in house cured signature bacon in our on site smoker and there is an on site Imu ground oven where we roast our Kalua pork. We also have Luaus and top-notch entertainment upon request. The unobstructed ocean view creates a great backdrop for weddings as well.
